IDAHO FALLS — Officials at the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center would not give an update Sunday evening to the condition of a local man Tased by police a week ago.

    EIRMC’s house supervisor declined to explain his comments saying only, “I can give no information on a patient by that name.”

    Calls to the Idaho Falls Police Department were not immediately returned.

    Ronald R. Mencer Jr., 44, has been in a coma at EIRMC since April 7, after police shocked him several times with a Taser.

    According to reports in the Post Register, Mencer was shocked by police after allegedly approaching officers aggressively with a screwdriver in one hand. Police Chief Mark McBride said officers initially tried to push Mencer away but he returned and tried to kick and bit them.

    A Taser was then deployed several times to subdue Mencer. Paramedics then arrived on scene and administered CPR and a breathing bag to Mencer.

    The officer who deployed the Taser remains on duty.
