POCATELLO — The Century High School cheerleaders recently found success at the JAMZ National Cheer Competition in Las Vegas, including their second consecutive partner stunt national title.

Meagan Brockett, cheer coach at Century High School, said this is the third year her students competed at the JAMZ National Cheer Competition. She said her team brought five routines to the competition.

“We placed third in pom,” Brockett said. “We took two partner stunts, and in that division, we took first and second.”

There are 29 members of the Century High School cheerleading team. Of those, 25 went to the competition.

“We’ve gone for the last three years,” Brockett said. “For all three years, we brought home first place in something.”

The competition had both cheerleading and dance teams competing. Brockett said for the pom routine, the team had to learn an extra set of dance skills in order to be eligible for the pom routine.

“We beat some actual dance teams, which was kind of cool,” Brockett said.

Both of the two boys who competed in the partner stunt routines were on the football team before joining the cheerleaders. Brockett said they joined the team around Thanksgiving. Neither had experience in cheerleading before.

“It took a lot of courage to embrace cheer and learn a whole new sport,” Brockett said. “It’s a different kind of strength. One of the girls was on the partner stunt last year. The other girl was in her first year on the team.”

Brockett said the best part about watching her team do so well at the competition was seeing all their hard work pay off. She said a lot of them had been doing extra practice anywhere they could.

“I had to kick them out after practice at one point,” Brockett said. “They were trying to get extra reps in after practice or during breaks. That heart and that drive was so fun to coach.”

Brockett expressed gratitude for everyone who made it possible for the cheerleaders to have this experience, whether that be administration, teachers, parents and friends.

“It’s a truly one-of-a-kind experience,” Brockett said. “I’m glad that they got to have that success and the positivity and excitement of the whole event.”

Now that the competition is over, the cheerleaders have a few weeks before they start preparing for next year. Brockett said tryouts will be held at the beginning of May.

“We really pride ourselves on being an inclusive team,” Brockett said. “I really love the diversity on my team. I love coaching skills beyond cheerleading and getting them prepared for life.”
