A 23-year-old Brigham Young University-Idaho student and former Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint missionary who served in the Idaho Pocatello Mission was killed in a car crash last weekend on Highway 91 north of Preston.

John “Jay” G. Mills IV hailed from Cumming, Georgia, and died from injuries he suffered in a single-vehicle wreck that occurred around 9:45 a.m. Saturday on U.S. Highway 91.

Mills was a passenger in a 2005 Toyota Highlander SUV driven by a 22-year-old man, also from Cumming, that was traveling southbound on Highway 91 when it left the roadway. The driver overcorrected and the SUV rolled over a guardrail, Idaho State Police said.

Mills was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The Toyota’s driver, whose name hasn’t been released, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. No updates on his condition have been provided. Both men were wearing seat belts, state police said.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Franklin County Fire Department assisted state police at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

Friends and family have expressed deep sorrow over Mills’ death following the crash.

Born on June 4, 2002, Mills was the oldest son in his family and is survived by his parents, three siblings and grandparents.

“John was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints,” stated his obituary. “He graduated from early morning seminary, where he had perfect attendance for five years. He served his mission from August 2022 to August 2024.”

While attending BYU-Idaho in Rexburg, Mills majored in biology.

“The Mills family is facing unimaginable heartbreak, and their friends and community are coming together to support them in any way possible,” Smith wrote on GoFundMe.com.

As of Thursday morning, over $29,000 had been raised via GoFundMe for Mills’ funeral costs with $15,000 of that money donated in just one day.
