BLACKFOOT — Bingham County Commissioners are mulling some changes to solid waste fees in the future. 

Commissioner Ladd Carter said they are losing money on solid waste disposal. The county had to make up for a nearly $137,000 shortfall in 2010, and is expecting to be $260,000 short this year, Carter said. 

“We’re trying to stabilize that fund,” he said. 

To help in that cause, the commissioners are looking at charging fees for some things like refrigerator and tire disposal, which have been free in the past.

“It costs us a lot ... to have the freon removed from fridges and freezers,” Carter said, adding that more and more people are also discarding their tires in Bingham County to avoid paying fees in surrounding areas. 

In addition, the commissioners are mulling a moderate increase on the solid waste fee connected to property taxes — they haven’t yet set an amount. 

Carter said city officials throughout Bingham County have offered input at hearings on the matter, along with members of the public. Commissioners plan to make their final decision in the near future, but haven’t set a date for that meeting yet.
