Alone at the center of a sunny forest clearing, a giant whitebark pine with broad limbs rose skyward from a mountain plateau.
Diana Tomback spotted the ancient tree in the distance and climbed faster up the wooded hillside, located in Wyoming's Wind River Range. The professor voiced elation at the discovery of the old-growth pine last month at about 9,600 feet of elevation, near the Continental Divide.
