    May 17, 1988: About 670 west side homes in Pocatello lost power when a car struck a power pole south of Main Street and knocked down a wire. Residents near Johnson and Fremont and to the Riverside Golf Course went without electricity for about 36 minutes.    

    50 years ago

    May 17, 1963: Pocatello is literally going to have trees growing on its sidewalks. Fargo’s Department Store obtained permission to plant four maple trees in the 200 block of South Main. The trees come from the East and take up less than three feet of the 10-foot sidewalk.    

    100 years ago

    May 17, 1913: The Pocatello gas and power plant near Gould street is a very modern structure. It is capable of supplying gas to 30,000 people. It is housed in a substantial concrete and brick building. F.U. Gates is the new manager.

    May 17, 1963: President Kennedy called Gordon Cooper’s feat one of the “victories of the human spirit” when the astronaut orbited the earth. Thousands had a part in it. It was a supreme example of how men working together can achieve a dream.
