The Amber Alert for Idaho Falls resident Aaliyah Esqueda was canceled Monday after the 5-year-old was safely located in Mexico.
Idaho Falls Police Department officials further indicated that Esqueda is currently with her father in Mexico and that detectives are working closely with other agencies to bring her back to Idaho.
A kidnapping investigation began on Sept. 6 after the IFPD received information from Esqueda’s legal guardians that her grandparents were taking her to Mexico.
It was believed that Esqueda and her paternal grandparents, 71-year-old Irene Ma Esqueda and 74-year-old Salvador Esqueda, boarded a bus in Idaho Falls last Thursday at 11 p.m. and departed for Mexico.
According to police, Debra and Scott Yagues have legal guardianship of Aaliyah Esqueda. She was visiting with her father's parents and was to be returned on Sept. 8. However, a relative sent a message via Facebook saying the Esquedas were taking the girl to her father in Mexico.
It was not made clear Monday whether or not Esqueda’s paternal grandparents will be criminally charged.
