BOISE — Those with the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation issued a warning Monday reminding boat enthusiasts to always wear a life jacket.

    In fact, May 18–24th is National Safe Boating Week.

    “Life jackets are now more comfortable and lightweight than ever  with many new styles, including suspender and fanny-pack. Make sure they are U.S.C.G. approved,” said Juelie Traska, the IDPR boating education coordinator in a news release. “Nationally, over 700 people drown each year from recreational boating accidents, making it imperative for you to wear your life jacket at all times while you are on the water.”

    As part of the national campaign, IDPR is advising boaters to take the time to check their safety gear, replace old life jackets, service their boats and review boating laws before heading out for the first time this summer.

     “This year, during safe boating week, and throughout the boating season, remember to practice safe and responsible boating, always wear your life jacket and be alert and aware while on the water,” Traska said. “By practicing these simple steps you can save your life, as well as the lives of the people boating with you.”

Safe Boating Tips:

* Take a safe boating course.

* Get a vessel safety check.

* Never boat under the influence of alcohol, drugs or prescription medications.

* Wear a life jacket.
