HYRUM, Utah — Two people are dead following a Sunday morning standoff at a mobile home park in this city near the Idaho-Utah border.

Cache County sheriff’s deputies evacuated homes in the area from 400 West and 100 South to Main Street in Hyrum, a city of about 10,000 people located near Logan, and issued a notice to “stay completely away” from the area due to an active shooter Sunday morning.

Police reported later Sunday that the incident ended with two dead, one of whom was a man. We have received no reports about any law enforcement officers being injured.

The incident began to unfold around 5 a.m. when police dispatch received a call from a 45-year-old man who said he killed his wife, according to a statement from Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen.

Cache County deputies responded and once on the scene the suspect opened fire on them, authorities said. Jensen said the deputies found cover and the Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was deployed to the scene.

“Once on scene, the suspect opened fire on the SWAT team and they returned fire,” the statement from Jensen stated. “An armored vehicle from Logan police (arrived and) Brigham City and Ogden PD were called and containment was set up around the house. Negotiations teams made contact with the suspect and the suspect sent pictures of his bomb vest and what appeared to be explosives inside the house.”

Law enforcement officers set up a staging area and command post at an LDS church north of the scene as the standoff continued.

The suspect at some point Sunday morning stopped communicating with police.

Additional law enforcement armored vehicles were deployed to the scene to help SWAT officers safely look through the windows of the suspect’s mobile home.

Police later confirmed that the incident was over and two people were dead but further details have not been released.

The investigation into the incident has been turned over to the Northern Utah Critical Incident Team, authorities said.
