BOISE — Idaho lawmakers are recommending a mandatory minimum fine for small amounts of marijuana possession.
Rep. Bruce Skaug, R-Nampa, introduced legislation Tuesday in the House State Affairs Committee that would create a minimum $420 fine for possession of any amount less than 3 ounces of the drug. The crime would be a misdemeanor.
The bill adds to existing felony penalties for possession of more than 3 ounces of marijuana, which is a prison sentence of up to five years or a maximum fine of $10,000, or both the sentence and a fine.

Recreational use of marijuana is legal in some of Idaho’s neighboring states, including Washington, Oregon and Nevada. It’s legal only for medical uses in Utah and illegal in Wyoming.
The committee voted to introduce the legislation, which paves a way for it to be brought back for a public hearing.
