FORT HALL - Sage Hill Travel Center will be the name of a new Shoshone-Bannock casino, which is scheduled for completion in January and is set to open next spring.
Tribal members submitted names for the truck stop and casino, which will be located just off exit 89, and the Fort Hall Business Council chose the winner.
Gail Martin submitted the name bohogoi', which is derived from the Bannock word bohoo'bi, meaning sagebrush, and gu'ai, which means the tip, or top of.
"As a council, we wanted to select a name that represents the area," Chairman Alonzo Coby said in a press release.
The name is an accurate depiction of the area where the gaming venue is located, he said.
Martin said she submitted the name because the area, known as Gibson, is traditionally known as bohogoi'.
A Shoshone-Bannock tribal member, Martin also submitted other names that were combinations of Bannock and Shoshone words.
She received a $500 honorarium, which she plans to divide equally with Louida Unger and LaVerne "Bernie" Jim, two elders she consulted before sending in her suggestion.
The Sage Hill Travel Center will feature 100 new gaming machines, a convenience store and a 30-seat cafe and trucker's lounge.
The multimillion-dollar project is being funded through the Shoshone-Bannock Economic Development funds.
