POCATELLO - The state has finished posting signs along its interstates and highways alerting motorists of a law passed last year requiring that drivers slow down and move to the far lane when passing police officers and emergency personnel working on the shoulder.

Lt. Ismael Gonzales, with Region Five of the Idaho State Police Department, said about nine signs have been posted in the area, including one at milepost 64 near Century High School.

"Anybody coming into Idaho from another state will see that sign," Gonzales said.

The state finished posting the signs on Nov. 5. Gonzales said failing to follow the law is a moving infraction, and violators are subject to a $75 fine.

He said ISP encourages officers to make passenger-side approaches during traffic stops based on the danger of passing vehicles.

"It just gives them that much more of a safety cushion to be safe," he said. "We're also trying to protect people we stop on the highway."
