SUPERINTENDENT TOM LUNA PRESS RELEASE

BOISE n The following is a statement from Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Luna regarding the Governor's announcement of a possible budget shortfall in Fiscal Year 2009.

"Idaho's public schools are fortunate that if a budgetary holdback does occur, local schools would be held harmless because any financial shortfall would be covered by the Public Education Stabilization Fund. I am grateful to the Idaho Legislature for having the foresight to create this fund in 2003 and then to deposit $100 million into it in 2006 to help deal with tough economic times like we are experiencing today. Even though the Public Schools Budget will not be impacted this year, I still urge local school districts and school board members to look at every dollar currently being spent and to ensure that we are spending every taxpayer dollar efficiently and effectively, especially during these tough economic times."
