POCATELLO - The Pocatello Food Co-op, which had been considering a possible move out of its current location in the Kinport Junction building based on financial concerns, has signed a new lease and will stay put for another six months, board member Kevin Walker said Friday.

The co-op, located in Kinport Junction building at 815 S. First Ave., has 850 members and recently celebrated its second anniversary in business. But only 20 percent of members have been regularly using the store, and co-op officials had been discussing options to cope with rising debt.

Options under consideration including moving, closing or scaling back the size of the current store location. Walker said a small coffee business has opted to move into the co-op area to help it save money by scaling back on space.

Though those who buy memberships are eligible for discounts, everyone is welcome to shop at the co-op. Additionally, the co-op offers 10 percent discounts to students on Tuesdays and senior citizens on Wednesdays. Several volunteers help to staff the co-op.

The co-op offers bulk foods, organic produce, honey, fresh dairy products, handmade crafts, soaps, cards and a host of other products from about two dozen local growers, vendors and purveyors.

The co-op focuses on environmentally friendly products and reuses jars, containers, egg cartons and glass milk jugs.
