POCATELLO - The seven-member Bannock County Fair Board is working with Idaho State University to make good use of a new covered arena erected last year.
Chairman Dale Almond said the board is hopeful that the $500,000 facility will provide a venue for the college rodeo program.
In June the Bannock County Fairgrounds will host State High School Rodeo events which will draw young cowboys and cowgirls from eight school districts statewide, Almond said.
The fair board is also working with CW HOG to provide a local site for its hippotherapy program, which uses the horse's movement to provide carefully graded sensory input. A foundation is established to improve neurological and sensory function.
While the county fair season is still months away, the entertainment lineup for this year is already set and includes spray can artists Matt Sorenson and the Calhounes, who are back by popular demand.
The fair board operates on an annual budget of $600,000 for both the North Bannock Fairgrounds in Pocatello and the South Bannock fairgrounds in Downey.
"We're really excited by the support the commissioners have given us," Almond said.
Almond said many improvements at the fairgrounds are done in cooperation with local organizations.
"We buy the material and they provide the labor," he said.
A new stage at the fairgrounds was built by members of the local Elks lodge.
