BLACKFOOT - The Bingham County Sheriff's Office is warning citizens not to be taken in by the most recent scam to hit the area, leading people to believe they have won a Canadian lottery.
The scam involves checks, some of which are in excess of $3,000, which are mailed to recipients. They are told to deposit them and then send those funds back via Fed-Ex to pay taxes. They are promised they will then be sent additional winnings. The scam artist's check is later found to be worthless.
The sheriff's office cautions people that any lottery or sweepstakes drawing that are legitimate do not require the person to send any money before receiving their prize winning.
Anyone receiving such checks or any which they feel are suspicious should contact law enforcement.
