The winter storm that arrived in East Idaho late Thursday night is forecast to dump several additional inches of snow on much of the region this weekend before exiting on Monday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning to alert East Idahoans of the storm's dangerous impact on the region's roads, especially in the higher elevations.

Up to 6 inches of additional snow could fall early Saturday morning through early Monday morning in the Albion, Almo, Malta, Rockland, Arbon, Holbrook, Inkom, McCammon, Arimo, Downey, Lava Hot Springs, Malad, Preston, Thatcher, Emigration Summit, St. Charles, Montpelier, Georgetown, Paris, Grace, Bancroft, Soda Springs, Henry, Bone, Wayan, Swan Valley, Victor, Palisades, Ashton, Tetonia, Driggs and Island Park areas.

Winds of up to 55 mph will accompany the snow in East Idaho, making for driving conditions that could become "very difficult to impossible," the weather service said.

Motorists should expect drastically reduced visibility and downed tree branches in East Idaho during the storm.

"If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency," the weather service said.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect for East Idaho's lowlands through Saturday afternoon but could be extended depending on conditions.

Mud Lake, Idaho National Laboratory, Craters of the Moon, Idaho Falls, Ammon, Rexburg, St. Anthony, Rigby, Pocatello, Chubbuck, Blackfoot, American Falls, Aberdeen, Shelley, Firth, Fort Hall, Burley, Rupert, Heyburn, Raft River and Declo could all receive another couple of inches of snow Saturday morning through Saturday afternoon.

Beyond that, more snow and some rain are possible in these lowland areas until the storm exits early Monday morning.

East Idaho's higher mountains could receive as much as two feet of snow from the storm early Saturday morning through early Monday morning.

Elsewhere, winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories are in effect in most of the rest of Idaho as well as in surrounding states.
