East Idaho is under a blizzard warning because of a severe winter storm that’s forecast to hammer the region Thursday night through Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service is urging people to stay off the roads during the storm, which is expected to bring large amounts of snow, 60 mph winds and dangerously cold wind chill to East Idaho.

“Travel should be restricted to emergencies only,” the weather service stated. “If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle.”

The blizzard warning is coming on the heels of another powerful snowstorm that exited East Idaho on Wednesday.

The Tuesday-Wednesday storm dumped several inches of snow on East Idaho and brought powerful winds to the region. The incoming storm appears to be even stronger and more dangerous with even larger amounts of snow expected along with wind chill fueled by 60 mph gusts that will make conditions feel as cold as minus-40 degrees.

Conditions are going to be so dangerously cold that the weather service has issued a wind chill watch for much of East Idaho.

“The cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes,” the weather service stated.

The areas expected to receive the most snow from the storm — up to 10 inches Thursday night through Saturday morning — are Inkom, Arbon, Arimo, McCammon, Downey, Lava Hot Springs, Malad, Preston, Thatcher, Emigration Summit, St. Charles, Montpelier, Georgetown, Paris, Grace, Bancroft, Soda Springs, Henry, Bone, Wayan, Swan Valley, Palisades, Victor, Ashton, Tetonia, Driggs, Albion, Almo, Malta, Rockland and Holbrook.

Up to 8 inches of snow could fall on the Pocatello, Chubbuck, Blackfoot, American Falls, Aberdeen, Shelley, Firth, Fort Hall, Burley, Rupert, Heyburn, Declo, Raft River and Oakley areas and up to 3 inches of snow could fall on the Island Park, Mud Lake, Idaho National Laboratory, Atomic City, Craters of the Moon, Dubois, Spencer, Arco, Idaho Falls, Ammon, Rexburg, Rigby and St. Anthony areas.

The storm could dump as much as 20 inches of snow on East Idaho’s higher mountains.

The weather service said the storm could make driving “very difficult to impossible” in East Idaho so please stay off the roads.

Severe winter weather warnings are also in effect throughout the rest of Idaho and in all surrounding states because of the storm.
