Bear Lake football added another impressive victory to its season Friday night, edging Firth 22-21 in an overtime thriller.
The Bears found themselves in a tight defensive battle early, trailing 7-0 at halftime. Firth extended its lead to 14-8 after three quarters, but Bear Lake continued to battle. The Bears tied the game at 14-14 in the fourth quarter, forcing overtime.
In overtime, Bear Lake came through when it mattered most, scoring to take a 22-21 lead and then holding off Firth to secure the victory.
Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Coach Cameron Crane said he was proud of the way the team responded throughout the game.
“I am just so proud of these boys,” Crane said. “When our offense struggled, our defense held the line. When our defense gave up a big play, the offense responded with a game-winning touchdown.”
Crane said the Bears’ ability to play together has become one of the team’s greatest strengths.
“These boys are so fun to watch play together,” he said. “They have great chemistry, and every player gives their all to get that win.”
Bear Lake finished the night with 256 total yards, including 180 passing and 76 rushing. Junior quarterback Dax Perkins completed 15 of 29 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. He also led the Bears in rushing with 34 yards on seven carries.
Senior Broxton Birch had a standout night receiving, catching seven passes for 106 yards and a touchdown. Junior Tyson Alleman added two receptions for 29 yards and a touchdown while also rushing 11 times for 27 yards and scoring another touchdown. Senior Tyken Carlisle rushed six times for 15 yards.
Defensively, the Bears recorded 47 total tackles. Sophomore Mason Bloxom led the team with eight tackles, while Birch added seven. Carlisle recorded six tackles, Preston Wright had five, and Dax Perkins, Tate Ewing and Kutler Keetch each finished with four.
Wright also recorded Bear Lake’s lone sack of the game, while Birch intercepted a Firth pass and returned it seven yards.
The Bears’ three touchdowns came from Alleman, who scored twice, and Birch, who scored once. Bear Lake also converted two extra points.
Bear Lake’s record now stands at 3-0.
The Bears travel to South Fremont this Friday to take on the 2-1 Cougars. Bear Lake defeated South Fremont 28-20 last season, setting the stage for what should be another exciting matchup.
