NAMPA - Snake River's run at a 3A state championship came to an end Friday at Skyview High School in Nampa when Sugar-Salem, trailing by a point at the half, went on an offensive frenzy during the second half while pounding the Panthers 54-30.

"It really was the tale of two halves," said Snake River coach Steve Morton. "The first half was probably our best half of the year. The second half was probably the worst."

The Panthers took a 20-19 lead into the third quarter and appeared ready to continue keeping pace with Diggers early in the second half when the game began to quickly get out of hand.

"(Sofia) Hepworth hit a couple of 3-pointers in a row, and then we turned the ball over a few times," Morton said. "Next thing you know, they had an 11-point lead."

Hepworth led all scorers with 17 points.

Morton said his game plan included making Sugar-Salem earn all its points.

"We did a good job at that for a while," he said. "I knew for us to win, we had to take away the easy stuff. They are really good at getting a lot of quick transition baskets."

Saige Goff led the Panthers with seven points.

Snake River takes its shot at a third place finish today against Teton at Skyview High School at 11 a.m.
