5A: Championship

Lewiston 56, Madison 48

NAMPA - Lewiston denied eastern Idaho a final state championship when it defeated Madison 56-48 Saturday in the 5A title game to close out the 2009 state tournament.

The Bengals gradually built up a lead throughout the game, ultimately getting up by as much as 10. The Bobcats, who play in the same conference as Highland, led only once in the game.

Helping Lewiston's cause was its proficiency from deep. The Bengals drained 8-of-16 3-point attempts. Jared Heitzman hit five of those on the way to a team-high 18 points.

Madison attempted more treys than its opponent by only went 5-of-19. Josh Fuller led the way for the Bobcats with 21 points, and Bo Dayton added 10 points.

4A: Consolation

Blackfoot 75, Hillcrest 60

BOISE - It took until the final day of the 4A state tournament, but the Blackfoot boys' basketball team finally found a way to beat Hillcrest.

The Broncos beat the Knights 75-60 on Saturday to win the consolation championship at Borah High. The win came after Blackfoot lost to Hillcrest four times earlier in the season, including twice in the Sixth District tournament.

After the game was tight through three quarters, the Broncos pulled away with a dominating final frame, during which they outscored the Knights 23-13.

Jordan Bjornberg led Blackfoot with 26 points, while Nathan Walker added 17 points. The Broncos finished their season with a 20-8 record.

2A: Third place

Glenns Ferry 62, West Side 45

It was a blowout performance in the third quarter by Glenns Ferry on Saturday at Capital High in Boise after West Side lost a player to a broken arm early in the period.

That blow was too much to overcome, and the Pirates lost their bid for a third-place finish in the 2A state tournament with a 62-45 loss.

"We were 20-20 at the half," said West Side coach Tyler Brown. "Then they went on a 28-8 run. They shot well during the third quarter."

Brown said sophomore Kyler Austin's arm was broken early in the third, and it shook his team up. They were unable to regain their form until late in the quarter.

"The third quarter was the turning point in the game," Brown said. "It was unfortunate that it had to happen."

The Pirates mustered a 17-point performance during the fourth quarter but were just unable to comeback, allowing Glenns Ferry 14 points during the quarter.

Brown said a splint was put on Austin's arm and a pin may have to be inserted on Monday to aid in the healing.

1ADI: Championship

Genesee 54, Prairie 41

NAMPA - Genesee capped its perfect season with a 54-41 win over Prairie in the 1A Division I championship game Saturday at the Idaho Center.

The Bulldogs finished the season with a 25-0 record.

Much like it did in its semfinal rout of Sho-Ban, Genesee started strong, taking a 17-6 after one quarter to grab control of the game.

Beau Dahmen scored 19 points, and Daniel Carlson pitched in 16 for the Bulldogs.

David Sigler and Tyler Forsmann each scored 12 for the Pirates (19-7).

1ADI: Third place

CALDWELL - Sho-Ban was unable to overcome Hagerman's offensive prowess on Saturday at Vallivue High in Caldwell, and the Chiefs fell to the Pirates 61-52, losing their bid for third place in the 1A Division I state tournament.

"I think we were a little too tired from (Friday)," said Sho-Ban coach Merle Smith. "I thought we would have done better."

Sho-Ban managed to pull within four points of Hagerman with four minutes left in the game, but that's when the Chiefs started losing players to foul trouble.

"It really hurt us down the stretch when we three of our players fouled out," Smith said.

Smith said his team shot just 2-of-11 from beyond the arc and needed to pull down more rebounds to beat Hagerman on Saturday.

"We just never found the rhythm we had in that first game," he said.

The lone highlight from Sho-Ban's loss was a record set by the teams standout senior guard Magic Smith, coach smith said. Magic racked up another double-double Saturday, scoring 38 points and taking down 12 boards.

Combined with the 32 points he scored on Thursday and the 37 points he put up on Friday, Magic totaled a record 107 points during the tournament.

"I really liked that," Magic said, "but I would rather have had some wins and a state championship."

1ADII: Championship

Mackay 54, Garden Valley 50

NAMPA - The Mackay boys' basketball team held off a furious fourth-quarter rally by Garden Valley to capture the 1A Division II championship 54-50 on Saturday at the Idaho Center.

Entering the final frame, the Miners (18-6) led 47-31 before the Wolverines (21-4) made a late push. A big diffference in the game came from behind the 3-point line, where Mackay was 2-of-6 compared to Garden Valley's 6-of-34 shooting.

Kole Krosch led the Miners with 21 points, and Zach Donnot added 11 rebounds.
