One play summed up the night for American Falls in its 3A state playoff game against Shelley.

On the Beavers' third drive of the game, sophomore running back Michael Palacios broke through the Russet defense and wasn't touched, cutting the Shelley lead to 14-7.

At least, that's how it should have happened.

But the Beavers had hid the football too well, confusing even the officials, who blew the play dead with Palacios still on the Shelley 27.

"I told them before the game on that," American Falls coach Pat Patterson said. "We told them before the game it was coming and they still screwed it up."

American Falls didn't score on the drive, and the game went downhill from there for the Beavers, who ended their season with a 52-6 loss to the top-ranked Russets.

"They're a great team," Patterson said. "They are every bit deserving of their ranking. We've played Marsh Valley and we've played them, and we've scored on both of them. They played hard, and I'm proud of them."

That one almost-score was the highlight of the night for American Falls (2-7), who was simply overmatched by Shelley (9-0). After that drive, the Russets' talent and experience quickly took their toll on the young Beavers, and American Falls was left to try to use the remaining time to build on next season.

That was something Patterson had prepared for, and the Beavers sent in a high number of young players to get them some playoff experience. Of the Beavers' 38 players, only eight are seniors, and 24 of them are freshmen or sophomores. The Beavers' one touchdown involved a pair of freshmen, as quarterback Nick Herseim hooked up with Kolton Qualls.

"I look at those guys, and there's one of them (Devin Mock) that has played varsity football before," Patterson said. "We had freshmen and sophomores all over the field. But we can't use that excuse anymore. Every kid on our team has got varsity experience now. There's no more excuses."

For Shelley, the night belonged to its two powerful running backs, senior Gabe Nii and junior Aaron Adams. Despite the Russets' decision to work on their passing attack for most of the first half, the two each scored twice on the ground, with Nii adding a touchdown on a screen pass from Chase Richins that started the second half.

For Patterson, it's been a difficult season record-wise, but after making it to the playoffs, he's pleased with what his kids gave him during the season and hopes for more results as his players develop with experience.

"It's been a good experience," Patterson said. "These are the best attitude kids I've ever dealt with. They never complain, or if they do, it's about what jersey we wear."

In defeat, American Falls looked nothing like a team that had just been outclassed by the top team in the state. Instead, the Beavers spoke of a future when they might be able to compete with the top teams on the 3A level and senior Braden Campbell spoke of how much he had grown because of his teammates.

"This is my first year as a head coach in Idaho or Texas," Patterson said. "Like I told those kids, they've had a great attitude from Day One. They've done everything we've asked. I'm upset now because I want for them to win and I want for them to be successful. I've seen what it's like for this kind of thing. You want so bad for your kids to experience that. It's been a great year, and I wouldn't trade it for anything."

Shelley will advance to the state quarterfinals to play Marsh Valley if the Eagles defeat Salmon, or a yet-to-be determined opponent if the Savages are able to pull the upset.
