Grace 43, West Side 39

DAYTON - The Grace boys' basketball team started strong at West Side and held on to pick up a key 2A Fifth District road win, 43-39, on Friday.

"We don't play well at home, it seems the last couple of times," said Pirates coach Tyler Brown. "Give Grace credit, they jumped on us early."

Indeed, the Grizzlies did.

After one quarter, they led 15-9, which gave them enough of a cushion to hold off a late West Side charge.

Sam Corbett led Grace with 15 points, and Drew Povey scored 17 for West Side.

The Pirates are now 7-9 overall and 2-4 in league play, while the Grizzlies are 7-12 and 3-4.

Mackay 46, North Gem 43

BANCROFT - A long scoreless drought in the third quarter doomed North Gem in a 46-43 home loss to conference foe Mackay on Friday.

With six minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Cowboys led 32-25, but they didn't score again in the frame.

"We were doing a good job coming out of halftime, and we just had a six-minute stretch," said Rockland coach Ken Christensen. "We won the rest of the game otherwise."

The Miners went on to carry a 17-8 advantage in the third quarter that made the difference in the game.

Austin Wuttke led the way for North Gem with 17 points, and Shawn Banks added nine points.

The Cowboys (6-11 overall, 4-3 1A Division II Rocky Mountain) will travel to Rockland on Wednesday to close out the regular season.

Clark County 46, Rockland 41

ROCKLAND - The Rockland boys' basketball team suffered a cold-shooting night from the perimeter and allowed Clark County to pull away for a 46-41 win Friday at Rockland.

Despite the Bulldogs' shooting woes, the teams were tied 25-25 at halftime and 40-40 with 1:20 left in the game. Once Clark County took the lead in the final minute, though, Rockland could not respond against the Bobcats' zone defense.

"We couldn't buy an outside basket," Rockland coach Dan Ralphs said. "We were colder than ice. It didn't matter who was shooting."

Matt Nelson led Rockland with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Rockland (5-7, 3-3) plays its final home game of the season on Wednesday against North Gem.

Bear Lake 52, Snake River 51

MONTPELIER - Bailey Thomas drained an 8-foot jumper as time expired to give Bear Lake a 52-51 home win over Snake River on Friday.

The Bears led for most of the second half but trailed 51-50 when it got the ball back at halfcourt with 3 seconds remaining. Spencer Smedley got the inbounds pass and dished it off to an open Thomas for the game-winner.

"It was an up-and-down game for both sides," Bear Lake coach Brandon Carlsen said. "We just happened to come out on top."

Jordan Crane led the Bears with 16 points, while Thomas and Smedley finished with 12 and 10, respectively. Jordan Watt led Snake River with 20 points.

Bear Lake (10-9, 2-3) next travels to play American Falls on Friday.

Aberdeen 63, Soda Springs 61

SODA SPRINGS - In the first four minutes of the third quarter, Aberdeen turned a halftime deficit into a lead it would hold for good in a 63-61 win at Soda Springs on Friday.

The Cardinals led 37-34 at halftime, but the Tigers outscored them 19-14 in the period.

"Aberdeen came out aggressive, and we came out a little flat," Soda Springs coach Greg Bergholm said. "We fell behind the start of the third quarter, and that was the difference in the game."

Wade Wahlen led Aberdeen with 16 points, while Alex Maughan paced Soda Springs with 16 of his own.

Soda Springs (4-14, 2-4) next hosts West Side on Wednesday. Aberdeen (15-4) next travels to play Malad on Wednesday.

Marsh Valley 41, American Falls 32

ARIMO - Marsh Valley prevailed in a defensive struggle against American Falls, 41-32, on Friday at Marsh Valley.

The Beavers led 17-12 at halftime, but the Eagles outscored them 29-15 the rest of the way.

"It was a defensive battle," Marsh Valley coach Jason Brower said. "Both teams played well on defense, and down the stretch, we were lucky we knocked down some foul shots."

The Eagles finished 11-for-18 from the foul line, which Brower said was a good showing for them.

Marsh Valley (13-6, 4-1) next hosts Snake River on Friday.

Girls' basketball

Challis 64, Sho-Ban 48

SHOSHONE - The Sho-Ban girls' basketball team played right with the No. 1-ranked team in the state for three quarters, but Challis still pulled out a 64-48 victory in the semfinals of the 1A Division I Snake River Conference tournament Friday.

"We played good and had a lead at half," said Chiefs coach Everett Moore, "and in the third quarter, we got away from what we were doing. They're a good team."

In that third quarter, the Vikings outscored the Chiefs 24-6, completely negating the 25-21 lead Sho-Ban had at halftime.

Shayann Johnson led the Chiefs with 20 points.

With the loss, Sho-Ban now will play Oakley today in a loser's-out game.
