Pocatello 55, Minico 52

Pocatello boys' basketball coach Lee Ralphs succinctly summed up his team's 55-52 win over Minico on Saturday night at The Palace.

"It was a tale of two halves," he said. "Minico dominated the first half, and luckily, we had a better second half than they did the first half."

Senior Colter Morton's steal and dunk with 18 seconds left gave the Indians a 53-52 lead after rallying from a 14-point halftime deficit, and Johnathan Hancock's two free throws sealed the game for Pocatello.

Morton finished with 18 poits - nine of which came in the fourth quarter - and 11 rebounds.

After the sluggish first half, the Indians picked up their intensity thanks to the efforts of two other seniors in the third quarter.

"Ryan Pearson, he and Michael Decker got us going and back into the game in third quarter," Ralphs said, "and Colter stepped up in the fourth quarter."

Decker finished the game with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Pearson added nine points.

Pocatello improved to 7-9 with the win, and it will play at Skyline on Wednesday.

"I don't know why we start games so slow. It seems like we're always fighting back and making it interesting in the end," Ralphs said. "It was finally nice to get over the hump and come all the way back to win."

West Side 47, Marsh Valley 44

ARIMO - The West Side boys' basketball team used a huge run in the second quarter to spark a 47-44 win at Marsh Valley on Saturday.

After trailing 12-10 after the first quarter, the Pirates put together a 13-1 run over the length of the second quarter to build a commanding lead. They then held on for victory.

"They missed some shots, and we hit a few shots," said West Side coach Tyler Brown. "We jumped on 'em there, and they didn't adjust until the second half."

Josh Roberts and Dallas Turnbow led the way for West Side, as each scored 12 points. Dallan Bills led the Eagles with 11 points.

The Pirates (6-8 overall, 1-3 2A Fifth District) are back in action Wednesday at Aberdeen.

North Gem 47, Leadore 39

LEADORE - For the second straight night, the North Gem boys' basketball team had to make a long road trip.

All that time on a bus didn't affect the Cowboys on Saturday, though, as they jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead before holding on for a 47-39 win at Leadore.

"That was the main thing. Back-to-back road games, especially all the way to Leadore, we had a great first half," said North Gem coach Ken Christensen. "We shared the ball well. We were sharp, which was a surprise but a nice surprise."

Austin Wuttke led North Gem with 12 points, and Colton Davids added 11 on the strength of 9-of-10 shooting from the free-throw line.

With the win, the Cowboys are 6-10 overall and 4-2 in 1A Division II Rocky Mountain Conference play.

Sugar-Salem 56, American Falls 44

AMERICAN FALLS - The American Falls boys' basketball team hung with the No. 2-ranked 3A team in the state but ended up falling 56-44 to Sugar-Salem on Saturday.

"Sugar's a really good team," said American Falls coach Roger Thomas. "We came out and played really well in the first quarter, but then we got a little passive on offense. They shot the ball really well."

The Beavers held a 19-16 lead after the first frame, but the Diggers fought back to take a 33-28 halftime lead. American Falls couldn't recover from the deficit.

Preston Crompton led the way for the Beavers with 15 points, and Nate Villalobos chipped in 12 points.

American Falls (8-9) will play Friday at Marsh Valley.

Girls' basketball

North Gem 69, Leadore 36

LEADORE - The North Gem girls' basketball team overwhelmed Leadore on the way to a 69-36 road win.

With the victory, the Cowboys earned a share of the 1A Division II Rocky Mountain Conference regular-season title.

"We came out and we just man-to-man like we do everyone," said North Gem coach Corry Hatch. "We pressured them, and in the early going, we hit some jumpers. That really sparked us."

After the first quarter, the Cowboys held a 19-8 advantage and were never threatened.

Chynna Holbrook led the way with 13 points, and Tiffany Crossley added 11 more.

North Gem wrapped up its regular season schedule with a 14-7 overall record and a 7-1 mark in league play.

Rockland 42, Clark County 35

ROCKLAND - The Rockland girls' basketball team used a balanced attack to close out its regular season with a 42-35 win over Clark County.

At halftime, the Bulldogs led 22-13, and they were able to hold on in the second half while shuffling in a lot of players.

Kambrie Munk led the way for Rockland with 11 points while adding 12 rebounds and four blocked shots, and Carisa Robinson pitched in 10 points and five steals. The pair's efforts took pressure off of leading scorer Whitney Woodworth, who finished with nine points on three 3-pointers.

"They've been scoring more for us lately, which has been helping out," Bulldogs coach Vern Nelson said of Munk and Robinson.

With the win, Rockland ended its regular season at 9-9, and its 4-4 1A Division II Rocky Mountain Conference record will make it the third seed in next week's league tournament.

Bear Lake 58, American Falls 50 (OT)

MONTPELIER - It took an extra period, but the Bear Lake girls' basketball team rallied past American Falls to capture a 58-50 win Saturday to close out the regular season.

"It was just a good effort from everybody," Bears coach Jim Mattson said. "They played hard."

The Beavers jumped ahead early, though, and took a 20-17 lead into halftime. Mattson adjusted his lineup a little in the second half, sparking Bear Lake's run.

After the game was tied at the end of regulation, Bear Lake outscored American Falls 14-6 in the extra session.

Kayla Wallentine led the Bears (8-12 overall, 3-3 3A Fifth District) with 12 points, while Heather Wallentine added 12 points.

American Falls (4-15, 0-6) got 11 points from Alison Duffin and 10 from Shayla Bell.
