TEMPE, Ariz. - Jessica Baca's grand slam and a three-run shot by Whitney Chaffe lifted the Idaho State softball team to a 10-5 victory - its first of the season - over Illinois State on Friday at the Littlewood Classic.
The win was the first-ever for interim head coach Andrea Wilson.
The Bengals followed up that showing with a 4-1 loss to Iowa.
Against the Redbirds, Baca hit her two-out grand slam in the top of the sixth inning to make it 6-2. After Illinois State rallied to make it 6-5 entering the seventh, Chaffe blasted her first homer of the season to put the game away.
Idaho State pitcher Kandis Clesson (1-3) picked up the win with a complete-game effort.
In the second game, freshman Jennifer Martensen smacked her third home run of the season for the Bengals, but it wasn't enough against the Hawkeyes.
Idaho State is now 1-6 on the season and will continue the tournament today against Chattanooga and Kent State.
