Here's a sign of how competitive the city cross country meet was Friday at Ross Park: Century coach Frank Wolfe said the top three finishers in the girls' race did their best to finish in a three-way tie.

"Everybody took it pretty easy, the front-runners anyway," Wolfe said. "They were just out for a nice stroll."

Such is the purpose of the event, which is a relaxed event to serve as a tune-up for next week's district races.

Ultimately, Highland's Kylie Hutchison won the girls' race in 18 minutes, 34.4 seconds, while Century's Hannah McInturff was second in 18:34.8. Highland's Mariah Meyer took third in 18:35.4.

In the boys' race, the Rams placed seven runners in the top 10, led by winner Dallin Farnsworth, who crossed in 14:57.

Highland swept the team titles. The Rams girls finished with 23 points, with Pocatello and Century trailing with 53 and 58, respectively. The Highland boys nearly had a perfect score, ending with 18 to Century's 55 and Pocatello's 61.

All three schools will have their district races Thursday, with Highland running at the 5A District 5, 6 meet at Madison and Pocatello and Century competing at the 4A Fifth District event in Preston.
