CALDWELL - Midway through the second half, Century senior Nick Rodriguez picked up a yellow card that he didn't particularly agree with.

Diamondbacks coach Rufus Van Dyke told Rodriguez the best way to get rid of his frustration after the call was by scoring a goal.

Five minutes later on a penalty kick, Rodriguez did just that, and Century advanced to the semifinals of the 4A state soccer tournament with a 1-0 victory over Middleton at Brothers Park .

"It was awesome," Van Dyke said. "The kids didn't play great, but they played pretty well."

Zac Cuttlers drew the foul inside the penalty box to set up Rodriguez's winning PK.

Even before breaking through with the goal, Van Dyke felt his team was alway in control.

"I would say it was 60/40, 70/30 us most of the match," Van Dyke said. "They didn't threaten us more than once or twice the whole match."

Middleton (4-11-4) made the state tournament despite having just two wins in the regular season.

With the victory, Century (13-3-3) will play Bonneville at 2 p.m. today. Earlier in the season, the Diamondbacks defeated the Bees 3-1 in Idaho Falls.

"Our team's building," Van Dyke said. "We're peaking at the right time. We're gonna get better between today and tomorrow. We can play a lot better."

Skyview 3, Century 1

CALDWELL - Goals by Peyton Moon and Lindsey Washburn gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead early in the second half, but Skyview coach Lawrence Nitu stressed to his team that the lead wasn't completely safe.

Sure enough, the Diamondbacks cut Skyview's lead to 2-1 on Hannah Fort's goal.

The Hawks (16-3-1) were able to shut down Century's attack the rest of the way to escape with the win in the opening round of the 4A state tournament at Brothers park.

"We really know how to collect ourselves and move on," Nitu told the Idaho Press-Tribune. "Nobody had their heads down, momentum was still on our side."

Jenny Field provided Skyview with an insurance goal in the 71st minute. Field scored on a penalty kick after taking a hard fall by the Diamondback's goal. Even though she was a little slow getting up, Nitu still had confidence in his leading scorer to take the kick.

"The girls were pushing me to get someone else," Nitu said. "I said, 'no she needs to recover.' She earned the PK, so she was the right person to take it."

For the second straight season, Century (17-3-1) finds itself in the consolation bracket after never experiencing a first-round loss in seven prior trips to the 4A state tournament.

The Diamondbacks will play Wood River at 11 a.m. today.
