PRESTON - Dylan Lammers helped Century edge Preston for the team title at the 4A Fifth District cross country meet Thursday in Preston when he won the individual crown.

"I haven't ever really won a race before, so it felt awesome," said Lammers, who logged a time of 16 minutes, 27 seconds.

Century freshman Hannah McInturff won on the girls' side with a run of 18:26, but Preston won the team title. Heidi Free took second place and led a contingent of four Indians in the top six runners. Pocatello finished second.

The top two teams, as well as the top seven individuals, qualified for the state tournament. Of the two third-place teams, Pocatello's boys will send three boys to state, while McInturff will be the Century girls' team's representative.

"It was really fun," McInturff told the (Logan, Utah) Herald Journal). "It's nice to see where you're at in district. A good warm-up for state."

Highland sweeps

REXBURG - Highland swept the boys' and girls' team titles at the 5A District 5, 6 corss country meet Thursday at the Rexburg Municipal Golf Course.

Highland's Dallin Farnsworth clocked a run of 16 minutes, 15 seconds to win the boys' individual title. He led a contingent of seven Rams runners in the top 15.

On the girls' side, Kylie Hutchinson and Mariah Meyer finished one-two for Highland.

The state meet will be held next weekend at Circling Raven Golf Course in Coeur d'Alene. Highland coach Chris Belcher considers Mountain View the favorite, with Boise, Coeur d'Alene and Highland also in the mix.

"We're going to have to really make an attempt to get over our injuries and illnesses," Belcher said.

Bears take two

MONTPELIER - The Bear Lake boys and girls continued their domination of the 3A Fifth District by sweeping the district meet Thursday.

On the boys' side, the Bears finished with 25 points. Snake River finished right behind with 30 points. Bear Lake's Nathan Crane won the individual title in a time of 18:14.00.

In the girls' race, the Bears won with 23 points, with the Panthers in second with 38. Bear Lake's Amelia Crane edged out Snake River's Kallie Van Orden for the individual title. Crane crossed in 20:38.71.

Pirates boys, Cardinals girls win

MONTPELIER - With Josh Hatch, Tyler Olsen and Jordan Beutler leading the charge, the West Side boys cross country team knew it could defend its district championship if its fourth and fifth runners could hold their own.

In previous meets against rival Soda Springs this season, those fourth and fifth runners were unable to rise to the challenge, but that changed Thursday afternoon.

Kenny Bradfield and Corby Beckstead had their best races of the year, giving the Pirates the push they needed to edge the Cardinals 27-31 for their second straight 2A Fifth District title.

"We had two people who really saved us, because we knew that Josh and Jordan and Tyler were going to come in right up in the front, so we weren't worried about that," West Side assistant coach Jaron Packer said. "But Kenny Bradfield, No. 1, was the guy who really saved it, and then Corby Beckstead. Without them passing major people, we wouldn't have had this (district title)."

Soda Springs' Kasey Meyers won the boys' race in a time of 17:08. Hatch was right behind in 17:31, while Olsen finished third in 17:59.

On the girls' side, Soda Springs continued its dominance, as the Cardinals placed six runners in the top 10 on the way to an easy victory.

The Cardinals finished with 19 points, while runner-up Malad had 52.

Senior Bailee Siepert won the individual title in 21:05, while Soda Springs teammate Quincie Clark was second in 21:38. Danyka Deno (third), Dominque Froehlich (seventh), Cathryn Smith (eighth) and Carlie Olson (ninth) rounded out Soda Springs' top-10 finishers.
