MERIDIAN - The Century girls' basketball team led early during its opening game of the 4A state tournament against Bonneville on Thursday at Mountain View High School in Meridian.

But the Bees' slow start was just a prelude to the sting the Diamondbacks would feel after Bonneville took over the game halfway through the first quarter on its way to routing Century 53-25.

"Jitters or whatever you want to call it," said Century coach Angie Gonzalez. "Not to take anything away from Bonneville. They're a really good team."

Not just a good team, but a team that brought far more than Century could handle.

Century led 6-5 with roughly two minutes to go in the first quarter. That's when the Diamondbacks, seemingly set to keep pace with the Bees, fell apart.

It started with a 3-pointer from Bonneville guard Kylee Searle. While it was a clean shot that hit the bottom of the net, few in the packed Meridian gymnasium could have known they just saw the flood gates open.

The turnovers began to flow from Century, and Bonneville was quick to capitalize on the opportunities. By the time the final second of the first quarter ticked away, the Bees had completed a 13-0 run and took an 18-6 lead into the second quarter.

Century had 28 turnovers total in Thursday's game, and Bonneville capitalized to the tune of 28 points. The Bees shot from the field at a 33-percent clip while the Diamondbacks managed a meager 18 percent. Century sank just nine shots the entire game.

Century made the state tournament through a turn of events that didn't seem likely as the team started its district tournament two weeks ago. The Diamondbacks managed to knock off Preston on the road and again at home to take the district crown and a trip to state.

"We are just happy to be here," Gonzalez said. "I would have liked for us to perform better, but it's good that the girls could make it here."

Century picks up the fight for a consolation championship at 1:15 p.m. today, again playing at Mountain View High School.
