SMITHFIELD, Utah - After trailing for most of the game, Sky View got the lead when it counted when guard Brayden Compton's 3-point shot bounced around the rim before dropping through with fewer than 5 seconds to go in the Bobcats' 45-43 win over the visiting Highland on Friday.

Compton, who came into the game averaging 7.75 points per game, was having a poor shooting night, hitting just 1-of-8 before that point.

With the help of some stifling down-the-stretch defense, the Bobcats got the ball back after Highland's Nathan Hartman missed the front end of a one-and-one. Sky View brought the ball up court, looking to work for the final shot.

With the last seconds ticking away, Compton stopped his dribble at the top of the key and looked around for someone to pass to. When nobody stepped out to cover him, Compton pivoted, hesitated a little and tossed up the game-winner, giving his team a season sweep over the Rams.

"Coach was trying to run a play … they were playing good defense on us," Compton said. "The time was running down and they just didn't guard me, so I just pulled up and shot it.

"It just feels great to come out here, play good and get a win against a good team."

While defense was key to Sky View's win, the Bobcats outrebounded the Rams 29-23, including a glaring 16-6 advantage in defensive rebounds.

Sky View post man Dallas Elder was one point shy of a double-double, grabbing 11 rebounds to go along with his nine points.

Sky View head coach Kevin Andersen was glad to see his team crash the boards the way they did, limiting the Rams to one shot per possession several times throughout the second half.

"We had some people hitting the glass today," Andersen said. "That's big. … If we get a defensive board, we're stopping them from getting an easy putback, so we gotta keep hitting the glass like we did tonight."

With the battle as intense as it was in the post, the Rams often had open 3-point looks. Highland's Brady Smith led both teams, sinking four treys on the night. Though his teammate, Taysom Hill, was leading all scorers with 15 points through three quarters, Smith caught Hill in the fourth, ending the game with 16. Hill didn't score in the final frame.

Along with the rebounding disparity, Highland head coach Chris Frost lamented the Rams' missed free throws in the final minutes of the game.

"I thought what hurt us was free throws," Frost said. "At the end of the game, we go (to the line) with three front ends (of one-and-ones) and lose it.

"Then, when we were up five, we took quick shots. That's what hurt us more than rebounding, I think. Yeah, (Sky View) got some O-boards, we tried some different defense than what we have been and didn't get some block outs. But, you know, you gotta make free throws in the clutch or you're not gonna win many games."

Sky View was also helped in the second half by some great passing-lane defense by guard Kyler Carlsen. In addition to his 15 points, Carlsen notched nine steals on the night. The junior shot 6-of-14, including the Bobcats' only other 3-pointer.

The first half, however, belonged to Hill, who had 12 by intermission. Hill shot 5-for-9 before the break, including 2-for-4 from downtown. But after halftime it was a different story as the Bobcats limited Hill to just two shots in the third quarter and none in the fourth.

Sky View's Eric Berntson was the only other scorer to reach double figures with 13. Berntson was 5-for-10 from the field and 3-for-5 from the line.
