POCATELLO - Jeff Hough asked his players for an additional 10 percent effort on Tuesday against Blackfoot and the Indians came within three points of their second victory on the season.

Facing Century in 4A Fifth District play on Thursday, the Pocatello girls' basketball coach said he asked for an additional 5 percent over Tuesday's performance, and the result was a come-from-behind victory as Poky beat the Diamondbacks 54-46 and picked up its second win of the season. It was also the team's first district win.

"I couldn't single anyone out," said Hough of his players' performances against Century. "It was a complete effort by everyone, a real team game."

In fact, Poky's scoring was well distributed throughout with Becca Aplington and Kelsey Parker each scoring 13 points and Brenna Brigham and Andrea Beseris each scoring 10 points.

"As a team we performed really well tonight," Parker said. "We decided we wanted a win and went after it. It felt good."

It seemingly took Century little effort to cruise through the first half, going into the locker room with a 23-17 lead. Tasi Kelemete, celebrating her 17th birthday, was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, scoring 12 points during the first half. She had 22 points on the night.

Coming out in the third quarter, the Diamondbacks again seemed to be easily in control, starting the second half on a 6-2 run and pushing their lead to 10 points with 5:48 left in the quarter.

That's when Hough called a timeout to remind his players to live up to his request.

"I said 'Ladies, you promised me another 5 percent,'" Hough said.

The Indians followed that timeout with an 11-1 run and tied the game at 30 with 2:04 left in the third quarter.

Poky's defense before and after the timeout almost seemed like two entirely different teams. Prior to the timeout, Century easily moved the ball around, choosing the moment in would throw inside to a teammate with an open look under the basket.

After the timeout, Century had difficulty moving the ball around the perimeter, and getting it inside was like threading a needle at times. If a Diamondback player did get the ball inside, she had no open look.

A smothering defense from Pocatello for the last 13 minutes of the game led to numerous turnovers and fastbreak opportunities. Pocatello scored 22 points in the fourth quarter, five points more than the team scored in the first half.

Century managed to finish the third with a two-point lead, pushing it to three points early in the fourth, but with 6:03 left, Parker hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 36. With 5:15 left in the game, Century and Pocatello were tied at 38 when the Indians pulled away for good.

Poky went on a 16-8 run to close out the game.

"We came out strong in the first half. We really played well as a team," said Jenna Ellis, a freshman guard for Century. "We just have to push harder to close a game out. We have to keep pushing."

Century coach Angie Gonzalez said her players still have a lot of learning ahead of them.

"I keep going back to the drawing board and starting over," she said.

With the loss, Century goes to 4-8 on the season and 1-2 in 4A Fifth District play. Century next plays Saturday at Minico.

Poky's win takes it to 2-12 on the season and 1-1 in district play. The Indians next play Jan. 16 at Preston.
