Grind unkind to Weyen
Chance Raver prepares to start his time trial Saturday evening on Frontage Road outside of Pocatello.

POCATELLO - Matt Weyen's insurmountable lead wasn't so unbeatable after all.

Carrying in a 45-second advantage from the first two stages, Weyen missed a breakaway 10 minutes into Sunday's Holt Arena Criterium and fell too far back to recover.

Yet again, the Team Bobs-Bicycles.com rider finished second in the Pro-1-2 men's race at the Gate City Grind - for the fourth time in four visits to the Pocatello cycling event.

"They're all great crit riders," Weyen said of the three who broke ahead and were never reeled in by the field. "Once they got ahead, we had no chance."

Cameron Hoffman, of the Utah-based American R.A.D.D. team, recovered from a 17th-place finish in the time trials to win the Pro-1-2 overall title with a three-stage time of 4 hours, 47 minutes and 53 seconds. He was in the crucial breakaway with teammate Bryson Perry and Pocatello High graduate Matt Shriver, who was biking solo from his pro team but latched onto the two Utahns.

Shriver won the criterium in 1:14.15 for his first Grind stage title as a pro.

Perry, who won the Grind last year, finished third overall this year thanks to the trio's mammoth performance on the toasty pavement outside Holt Arena. And that is indeed what it took, because just about everything had to go wrong for Weyen to drop as he did.

"Forty-five seconds is a lot to come back from," Hoffman said. "We were in the right position at the right time. We just stepped up and pedaled."

Shriver, Hoffman and Perry separated from the front of the pack early in the race. Usually, they said, attacks like that don't last, and they expected Bobs-Bicycles' riders to team up and catch them.

But the team never organized an attack, and the trio kept widening its lead by rotating the leader and drafting behind him. With about 30 minutes to go, the three lapped the field.

Entering the day, Bobs-Bicycles riders occupied three of the top six spots overall. By the end of the criterium, two of Weyen's teammates had dropped out and the others were stuck in the pack. WIthout their help, Weyen had little or no chance to catch up with Shriver and the Utahns - who said they didn't feel safe until they had rejoined the main group.

"I wasn't comfortable with the position we were in until we lapped everybody," Hoffman said. "We had to fight harder."

Shriver, who graduated from Pocatello High in 1999 and now lives in Colorado, was making his first appearance at the Grind as a pro racer. He finished fourth overall, but had he made a break in Saturday's Marsh Valley Road Race, he could have made a better run at the title, he said.

"That's something that I know better than to do. No. 1 rule, you make the break," he said. "But today, I felt pretty good."
