POCATELLO — Idaho State doesn’t just want to be good. The Bengals have a desire to be great.

While ISU had its share of miscues in its first conference home game, the Bengals countinued their season-long trek toward their ultimate goal of greatness. ISU defeated Weber State 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-15) Saturday at Reed Gym.

“We’re already good right now. But we need to make that our stepping stone, instead of our ceiling,” said ISU captain Tressa Lyman. “There’s more to us and we have more potential to be better than we are.”

Lyman spearheaded ISU’s offensive attack. The senior was the lone player in the game who reached double digits in kills with 16. Fellow ISU captain Hayley Farrer set up teammates for kills with 37 assists.

The Bengals were never in real danger against their rivals. ISU had the lead for the entirety of the first set. The highlight of Game 1 was a strike by Lyman that made an WSU player tumble.

The senior sprinkled in some softer shots to keep the Wildcats off balance, including during the first set. Another powerful hitter in Bailey Bars gave the Bengals the victory in the first game by delivering a ball in the opposite corner of the court.

The second set was more eventful, featuring three lead changes. It was where a lot of the mistakes by ISU came. Bengals coach Rick Reynolds said the struggles occurred because ISU was trying to make plays that were beyond its means, instead of keeping it simple.

Idaho State finished out the set on a 6-3 run after WSU tied the score at 19. Lyman was the one who came through again, with the set-winning point via block.

ISU cruised to a 19-9 lead in the third set before winning 25-15 and clinching the victory. It was the Bengals’ fourth straight-set win over Weber, which has not beaten ISU since 2011.

“We came out, played hard, gave a lot of effort,” Reynolds said. “Had a little bit of a blip in there in the second set where we had a few too many unforced errors, but overall we put more balls down, we dug better, we blocked better and it was just an all-around complete game by our complete team.”

The quality of the win against its rival this season may turn out to be better than in the past. Weber State (5-8, 1-1 Big Sky Conference) opened the league slate by beating Montana to end a three-game losing streak against the Grizzlies. The Wildcats are also already two wins away from matching last year’s overall win total.

Idaho State (10-6, 2-0 Big Sky Conference) looks to remain undefeated in conference play when it hosts Sacramento State on Thursday.
