PORTLAND, Ore. — Now this is the way good teams end the regular season.

Saturday afternoon in Portland under cloudy skies and mild conditions, Bengal pitcher Megan Meracle fired a perfect game as ISU blasted the Vikings 11-0 in a five-inning run-ruled game.

Meracle’s gem is the first perfect game and the seventh no-hitter in program history during the modern era.

The freshman from Borah High School in Boise ran her record to 6-1 on the season. For Idaho State, it closed one of the best regular seasons in program history, upping its record to 34-15, 13-2 in Big Sky play.

ISU had a winning record at home, on the road and at neutral sites this year.

Meracle was in control from the start, throwing only 66 pitches with six strikeouts, all swinging, by PSU hitters. She finished the game in a flourish as well, striking out Alapese Matautia to get the perfecto. In almost 63 innings pitched this year, she has 56 strikeouts.

For the afternoon, in addition to the six strikeouts, six outs were recorded on balls hit in the air and three outs on ground balls.

“I just feel incredible,” Meracle said while holding the game ball. “I had no idea I was close to getting it. I was just playing the game, I just wanted to win.”

ISU head coach Andy Rich was also asked about Meracle’s performance in the circle.

“She threw great today. It’s been coming, she’s been figuring things out and it all came together today,” he said. “Her ball was moving and she was attacking the strike zone. She was just fantastic today.”

As has been the case all this season, it was a number of Bengal players who contributed offensively. Alyssa Yee had a home run and four RBIs, with five other players getting an RBI apiece.

The Bengals took two of three over the weekend against Portland State in preparation for the Big Sky Conference Tournament, starting May 6.

In the doubleheader Friday, they lost the first game 6-2 despite two home runs by Ava Brown, then won the second game 3-2 as Brown went yard again. She now has 24 for the year, which is tied for second in the nation.

The Bengals will be the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament in Greeley, Colorado, for the program’s first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament.
