Poky AA rallies to beat Highland

The Pocatello AA Runnin' Rebels scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to overtake Highland AA, 7-6, Saturday at Halliwell Park.

"The bottom line about my team is we're not playing the best, but we know how to win," Pocatello coach Vinnie Benavidez said. "That's the best game I've seen Highland play. It's a shame to see them lose."

Highland was led by Devin Anderson, who suffered the loss after an error sparked the Rebels' comeback from down 6-1.

Joe Maravilla threw the whole game and got the win for Pocatello.

Pocatello AA improved to 9-5.

Poky Grapplers win four at regionals

The Pocatello Grapplers took home four first-place trophies from the prestigious Western Regionals in Butte, Mont., Saturday.

The Western Regionals featured 2,200 wrestlers from 10 states. After a two-year stop in Butte the Western Regionals move to Winnemucca, Nev., which beat out Pocatello, among other places, for the right to host in 2004-05.

In Greco, the Grapplers got a first from Abner Cook, in schoolboy 80 pounds, and Clayton Cook at 135-pound cadet.

Dallas Warren, at novice 105, Trevor Rupp, at novice 140, and Josh Strait, at cadet 105, all took second. Tyler Praska, at midget 75, took third. For Warren and Praska, the medals marked their first career places at Western Regionals. The duo also both for fourth in freestyle.

Also in freestyle, Rupp and Abner Cook took firsts at their respective classes.

Abner Cook is a double champ for the second straight year.

"He was very impressive," coach Todd Praska said.

Averett shoots ace

Jerry Averett, of Soda Springs, scored a hole in one on the No. 9 hole at Central Links Golf Course in Grace, Thursday. Averett used a pitching wedge on the 130-yard hole. Cherie Christensen witnessed the feat.
