POCATELLO — Thunder Ridge's baseball team hasn't had much to celebrate this season. But Friday night after rallying to beat top district dog Highland at Halliwell Park, the Titans earned every ounce of their jubilance.

Thunder Ridge scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning — three of them with two outs — to stun Highland on Friday, beating the Rams 10-7 to earn a split in their doubleheader. It was the Titans' second win of the week and third of their inaugural season, nearly sparking a dog pile on Halliwell's pitcher's mound.

The Rams (16-5-1, 9-2-1 5A District 5-6) committed seven errors in the loss, matching their hit total. It was Highland's first defeat since April 4 and put a damper on senior day.

Thunder Ridge (3-18, 2-10 5A District 5-6) has suffered multiple 18-run losses this season — lasting bruises as the first-year Idaho Falls school establishes its athletic programs — but capped its regular season with a memorable win.

“We this week have two wins, so we're finishing on the right note heading into districts next week,” Titans coach Chris Sundvold said. “We've got a long bus ride home, but it'll be fun going home with a victory.”

Thunder Ridge started its last-inning rally with back-to-back-to-back singles from Dylan Forsgren, Ayson Webb and Mason Dale. A bases-loaded walk to Taylor Cannon forced the tying run home.

Two batters later, Cade Lowe's pinch-hit, two-out, two-RBI single gave Thunder Ridge a 9-7 lead. Tanner Webb followed with an RBI double to extend it to 10-7.

Highland got a runner to second base with two outs in the bottom half of the seventh, but leadoff hitter Easton Durham grounded out to end the game and send the Rams quietly into the darkening night.

Amid the shouts and hollers of ecstasy billowing out of Thunder Ridge's third-base side dugout, someone reminded the Rams who just beat them, yelling: “3 and 18!”

“I don't think we are as good as we think we are,” Highland coach Christian Colonel said. “We can't just show up and win.”

Highland led 3-0 after the first inning and 7-6 after five. Many of the Rams' runs were helped by Thunder Ridge errors, but Highland looked like the top team in the district at times.

After the Rams made three errors in the first three frames, the defense settled in behind starting pitcher Josh Potter. The right-hander used 15 pitches to breeze through the fourth and fifth innings without allowing a baserunner, giving Highland's offense a chance to play catch-up. The Rams retook the lead in the fifth when Dalton Jones and Aaron Kearns scored on a two-error play.

Thunder Ridge's nine errors aided Highland's run total, but the Rams still stranded nine runners on base.

“We've just got to go out there and hit from the leadoff batter to the last hitter,” Colonel said. “We gotta hit, we gotta hit, we gotta hit.”

Potter was relieved after 5 1/3 innings by Seth Nate, who was on the mound when Thunder Ridge rallied. The Titans tacked five of their 14 hits in the seventh.

On the mound for the Titans, Forsgren withstood his team's errors and pitched all seven innings. Sundvold said it was Forsgren's first start of the season.

“Dylan Forsgren was awesome,” Sundvold said. “Unbelievable what he did there.”

Highland and Thunder Ridge meet again in the first round of next week's district tournament, Highland as the No. 1 seed and Thunder Ridge as the 4. Colonel made it clear that his team's seeding means nothing come tournament time. Friday's loss proved as much.

“Seeding doesn't matter to me. We've got to go out there and play a whole lot better,” Colonel said. “We did not play like a No. 1 team today.”

GAME 1: HIGHLAND 15, THUNDER RIDGE 8

Easton Durham's four RBIs led Highland to a 15-8 win over Thunder Ridge to open Friday's doubleheader at Halliwell Park.

The Rams plated four runs in the second to erase a 2-0 deficit and scored seven more times in the third. Durham, Jaxon Christensen and Aaron Kearns had two hits apiece, while Kearns and Seth Nate both tallied three RBIs.

Nate also tossed 2 1/3 innings in relief of starting pitcher Grayson Hunt, holding the Titans to one hit. Nate struck out six and walked none.
