POCATELLO — Brigham Cook raised the third-place trophy with his right hand, bringing the West Side fans to their feet.

It was a hero’s farewell for a team that suffered an excruciating season-ending loss Saturday at Holt Arena. West Side fell 61-28 to Declo in the 2A state semifinals, its first loss of the season. It was the second consecutive year the Hornets beat West Side in the semifinals.

The Hornets’ Keegan Duncan put the nail in West Side’s season, tallying 384 yards of offense and seven touchdowns. The Boise State commit had his way with the Pirates, who had no answer for the star player.

“It’s not the trophy anyone usually wants,” West Side coach Tyson Moser said. “It’ll wear off in a few days when you realized what an accomplishment this was. We are disappointed right now, but we had a great year. Nothing to feel bad about.”

After punting on their first possession of the game, the Hornets (11-0) scored a touchdown on nine of their last 11 possession of the game. The remaining two drives ended the second and fourth quarters.

West Side came into the game allowing 6.3 points per game, and no team had scored more than 20 points against the Pirates. The 61 points are the most West Side has allowed this decade.

“They handled us in every way possible,” coach Moser said.

Duncan bludgeoned the Pirates’ defense with his big-play ability, tallying touchdowns of 89, 82, 71, 20, 36, 6 and 6 yards. He had five rushing scores (98, 82, 20, 6, 6), one receiving TD (71) and one passing score (36).

The senior finished with 15 touches for 25.6 yards per touch.

“You plan all week to make them earn it by going down the field, “ coach Moser said. “It’s tough when he gets chunk plays. He is sure hard to stop. He is great. They were too much for us.”

The Pirates’ first drive of the game ended at the Hornets’ 20-yard line, and West Side didn’t reach Hornet territory until it scored a touchdown on its fourth possession of the game, cutting the Hornets’ lead to 21-6 with 6 minutes, 28 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

West Side fell behind 21-0 after Duncan’s 20-yard touchdown run with 8:26 remaining in the second. Duncan had three touchdowns on his first five rushes of the game, including an 82-yard dash one play after West Side turned the ball over on downs on its first possession.

“Had we finished our first drive, who knows what happens,” coach Moser said. “There are a lot of what-ifs, but they don’t matter now. Declo capitalized.”

West Side trailed 34-6 at halftime after tallying 84 yards of offense on 28 plays. The Hornets’ defense was suffocating all game, holding the Pirates to their second-fewest point total of the season. Enoch Ward and Jake Moser, the Pirates’ top two offensive weapons, were held to a combined 126 yards rushing on 27 carries.

Jake Moser, Cyrus Rindlesbacker, Dillon Robinson and Jaxon Moser scored the team’s four TDs.

“I knew we’d have a great team,” coach Moser said. “This was one of the best defensive teams we’ve had. You can’t take that from the kids. They worked hard.”
