It was a sweltering summer day

When a grandmother and a child

Neath the shade of an old-gnarled oak tree

Were sitting for a while.

"I wonder what I'll be when eighty,"

The four-year-old mused along.

"I can't even remember when I was four,"

The grandmother avowed.

"I wish I could remember all the words I hear,"

The four-year-old complained.

"I just try hard," the grandmother said,

"To recall ones I've attained."

They gave each other a sideways glance

The grandmother and the child.

They continued their fanciful musings.

Then fell silent for a while.
