POCATELLO — A local man was arrested Thursday morning after a police standoff at a north Pocatello mobile home park that lasted several hours, caused evacuations and prompted SWAT team deployment.

Police identified the suspect as Logan Smith, 40, of Pocatello, and said he’s being charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault for making threats while armed with a revolver and machete during the standoff.

The incident began to unfold around 6:20 a.m. Thursday when Pocatello police responded to a domestic disturbance involving Smith at the mobile home park at 1730 W. Quinn Road.

When police arrived, Smith barricaded himself in his mobile home at the trailer park with the woman and three children who reside with him, authorities said.

The standoff ensued and police quickly shut down multiple roads in the trailer park, evacuated several mobile homes as a precaution, and sent out a text message alert urging the public to stay away from the area.

Early in the standoff the woman was on the phone with police 911 dispatchers and informed them that Smith was armed with a revolver and machete and was threatening her and her children, police said.

With help from the dispatchers, police officers at the scene were able to safely evacuate the woman and three children from the residence without incident.

But the standoff continued with Smith, now alone in the mobile home, refusing to communicate with police at the scene, authorities said.

The Pocatello police SWAT team was then deployed.

Smith still wouldn’t communicate until around 11:50 a.m. Thursday when SWAT officers announced via loudspeaker that they were going to shoot tear gas into his mobile home. This caused Smith to immediately exit his residence and surrender without further incident.

Police said Smith was unarmed when he surrendered but they subsequently found his revolver and machete inside his mobile home.

Police transported Smith to Bannock County Jail, where he’s being held on three counts of aggravated assault, which carry a combined maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $15,000 fine.

Police said no one was injured during the standoff and no shots were fired.

“We want to thank the community for their patience and cooperation throughout the duration of this incident,” Pocatello police said in a news release following the standoff.
