A Pocatello man is in jail for calling in a bomb threat that caused the evacuation of the Idaho State Capitol building earlier this month, authorities said.

Donald Alan Hawkins, 58, was arrested Thursday on the 500 block of West Carter Street by Pocatello police on a felony charge of false reports of explosives in public or private places.

The incident began Oct. 8 when Pocatello police responded at 10:14 a.m. to reports that Hawkins was making threatening phone calls to employees of a Pocatello property management company, threatening to “blow them up,” authorities said.

Twenty minutes later, employees at the Idaho State Capitol complex in Boise received multiple threatening calls from the same phone number, Idaho State Police said. A male caller claimed a bomb had been planted in the building. The Capitol was immediately evacuated.

Two additional threatening voicemails from the same number followed, state police said.

Pocatello police located Hawkins later that morning and temporarily took him into protective custody. Pocatello police and Idaho State Police detectives later linked him to the Capitol threats.

State police confirmed on Tuesday that Hawkins’ voice matched the Capitol threat recordings. He was arrested Thursday and booked into Bannock County Jail.

No explosives were found and there is no ongoing threat to public safety, state police said.
