RIRIE — A head-on collision on U.S. Highway 26 east of Ririe Monday evening killed one man and sent five others to local hospitals — one via air ambulance — after a car crossed into oncoming traffic and struck an SUV carrying several people, Idaho State Police said.

Authorities have identified the man killed in the crash as 32-year-old Valentin Armenta Algandar of Idaho Falls.

The crash happened around 6:45 p.m. when a westbound 2010 Hyundai Accent sedan, driven by Algandar, crossed the centerline into the eastbound lanes and struck a blue 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe head-on, authorities said.

The Tahoe was driven by a 49-year-old woman from Jackson, Wyoming, and carried four passengers — a 24-year-old man from Jackson, a 53-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman both from Mexico, and a juvenile.

Algandar was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said.

The 53-year-old male passenger from the Tahoe suffered injuries severe enough to require transport via emergency helicopter to a local hospital. The remaining four occupants of the Tahoe — including the juvenile — were transported by ground ambulances to local hospitals. Their names and conditions have not been released.

The collision shut down Highway 26 for approximately four and a half hours as emergency responders worked the scene.

Idaho State Police were assisted by the Idaho Transportation Department, Central Fire Department, Idaho Falls Fire Department and the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation by state police.
