POCATELLO — Police say they have identified all of the individuals involved in a shooting in downtown Pocatello and have turned the case over to the Bannock County Prosecutor’s Office to determine whether charges will be filed.

The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. Sunday near East Center Street and Second Avenue.

Pocatello police officers on patrol found a man lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound and immediately rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived. The man was transported by Pocatello Fire Department ambulance to Portneuf Medical Center for treatment. His gunshot wound is believed to be non-life threatening, police said.

The shooter, his brother and their attorney went to Pocatello police headquarters on Wednesday for a lengthy discussion with investigators, police said Thursday. The shooter’s brother was present when the shooting occurred, police said.

As a result of Wednesday’s discussion with the shooter and his brother, police said there may have been a self-defense component to the shooting.

Police also said Thursday that the man who was shot was armed with a handgun at the time of the incident and had tried unsuccessfully to fire the gun.

Police have turned over all their information regarding the shooting to the Bannock County Prosecutor’s Office, which will decide whether to file charges in the next couple of weeks.

Authorities have not released the names of those involved in the shooting.

Police said the shooting appears to be an isolated incident and there is no known threat to the public.

Police initially thought the shooting might be related to another gunfire incident that occurred the week prior in the same area, in which no one was injured. However, police investigators determined the two incidents were not related.
