POCATELLO — A 22-year-old local man was recently arrested after police say he attacked two men at a group home with a screwdriver and a pot, leaving one of them bleeding profusely from the head.

Marqeden Miles England, of Pocatello, has been charged with two counts of felony aggravated battery following an investigation that unfolded after police were dispatched to a residence on Kurtwood Drive on April 22, according to police and court records the Idaho State Journal recently obtained.

The incident began around 4:30 p.m. when a roommate called police to report that England was trying to stab people with a flathead screwdriver and that someone had been stabbed in the head with it, police said.

Upon arrival, officers found an older man on the front lawn bleeding profusely from a significant head wound while another person applied pressure to it with a cloth, police said. The injured man told officers he wished to pursue charges against England.

England was still inside the residence when officers arrived. He eventually exited the front door, at which point officers drew their firearms and ordered him to the ground. England complied and was placed in handcuffs. Officers noted his hands, arms, hair and shirt were covered in blood, police said.

England told officers the incident stemmed from a longstanding dispute with a caretaker at the facility, where England lives as a client of the Adult and Child Development Center, an in-home care facility, police said. England said the caretaker had been distributing marijuana to other residents over the past year and that he had previously warned the man that if he returned, he would throw him out of the building, the police report says.

England told police that on the day of the incident, he heard the caretaker advising another resident on how to obtain a medical marijuana card, at which point he decided to confront the caretaker with a pot and screwdriver, police said. England said the caretaker “freaked out” so he struck him in the face with the pot, according to the police report.

England said a second man then intervened, punched him in the nose and threw him outside, at which point England began stabbing the second man repeatedly in the head with the screwdriver and striking him with the pot, police said.

A staff member who witnessed the incident corroborated much of England’s account and told officers England had come out of his room with a saucepan and a flathead screwdriver and hit the caretaker across the head with the saucepan, according to court records. The witness said the second man then stepped in to try to protect the caretaker, at which point England began hitting and stabbing him in the head with the flathead screwdriver, police said.

Another resident told officers he was outside when he heard sounds of a struggle and saw England hitting the second man in the head with a pan and a flathead screwdriver, the report says. The second man told police he saw England and the caretaker fighting and tried to take the pan away, at which point England struck him and “everything blacked out.” He said he did not remember anything after being hit on the head with the saucepan the first time, police said.

Officers photographed the second man’s bandaged head wound and bloodied hands, as well as an injury on the caretaker’s head. The metal pot and flathead screwdriver were later located in the closet of England’s room, with blood and hair on them, police said.

England was arrested and transported to the Bannock County Jail in Pocatello.

A criminal complaint was filed against England on April 23.

England appeared before 6th District Magistrate Judge Adam Strong for an arraignment hearing April 23 where his bond was set at $20,000.

He is scheduled to appear in court again May 5 for a preliminary hearing, where prosecutors will attempt to present sufficient evidence to elevate the case from magistrate to district court for trial.

If convicted of both felony aggravated battery charges, England faces up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000 on each count, with the potential for additional prison time.

Prosecutors are also seeking a deadly weapon enhancement against England, which could extend any prison sentence levied against him by up to 15 years.
