Joe Kline/Idaho State Journal A fog-causing inversion has covered the Pocatello area and will remain until Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

POCATELLO - A strong inversion that arrived Wednesday and is expected to persist through Tuesday has trapped pollutants in the valley and forced the issuance of an air quality advisory for the area.

Inversions typically occur in the winter and are caused when a cold air layer covers warmer air closer to the ground.

"We have not had an inversion like this with these pollutant levels since 2005," said Melissa Gibbs, air-shed coordinator with the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality.
