Memorial Day weekend claimed at least five lives across Idaho.

The deaths included a 12-year-old boy who drowned at a popular Twin Falls park, a man fatally shot during a confrontation with sheriff’s deputies near a rural town, two people killed when their UTV plunged into a North Idaho river and a Homedale man who died in a head-on crash with a commercial truck in Caldwell.

All five deaths occurred Friday through early Monday morning.

The 12-year-old boy’s death occurred Saturday evening. At approximately 7:02 p.m., first responders were dispatched to Dierkes Lake Park in Twin Falls after the boy went underwater and did not resurface. The Twin Falls County Search and Rescue Dive Team located the boy in the water. He was transported by ambulance to St. Luke’s Magic Valley Regional Medical Center, where he later died. His name has not yet been released.

The Twin Falls Police Department, Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office, Twin Falls Fire Department, Magic Valley Paramedics and St. Luke’s Life Flight all responded. Shoshone Falls and Dierkes Lake Park were closed following the incident. The case remains under investigation by the Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office.

On Friday night, a man died following a confrontation with Idaho County sheriff’s deputies near Lucile, a small north-central Idaho community.

At approximately 9:51 p.m., the Idaho County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a woman reporting that an unidentified man was threatening to shoot her. Deputies responded and made contact with those involved. Shots were fired during the encounter and the man was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. No deputies were injured.

The Idaho State Police news release about the incident did not provide further details on the shooting and did not specifically say that the deputies had fatally shot the man, whose name has not been released.

But state police said they have been requested to conduct an independent officer-involved critical incident investigation of the shooting — standard procedure in Idaho when law enforcement use of force results in a death.

Earlier Friday night, a 52-year-old Potlatch man and a 51-year-old Potlatch woman died after their UTV went off a road, down an embankment and into a river near the 9000 block of Railroad Grade Road near St. Maries. The crash occurred at approximately 9:25 p.m. The two were riding in a 2023 Can-Am Maverick Sport when the vehicle left the roadway. Neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not been released.

The roadway was blocked for approximately four and a half hours. Idaho State Police were assisted by the Benewah County Sheriff’s Office and Benewah County EMS. The crash remains under investigation.

The most recent fatality happened around 2:33 a.m. Monday in Canyon County, when a 2010 Ford Fusion traveling eastbound on Simplot Boulevard crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 2001 Kenworth commercial vehicle near Farmway Road in Caldwell. The Ford’s driver, a middle-aged man from Homedale, died at the scene. The Kenworth’s driver, a 57-year-old man from American Falls, was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured. All lanes have since reopened. Idaho State Police are investigating.
