On Wednesday morning, Central Fire District was notified of heavy smoke from a neighbor’s shop.

The call was made around 7:30 a.m. at a home on 100 N Rigby. The fire was coming out of a 60x40 shop on the property.

In a press release, Central Fire dispatched equipment from all four stations to respond to the call. A request was also made for a water tender from Ucon Fire aid in the incident.

A water tender is a tanker that transports water to areas where it can be difficult to get.

“We’re out in the country, (where) we only have 1,000 gallons of water, which sounds like a lot, but sometimes it’s not,” Central Fire Chief Carl Anderson said.

Anderson said when crews got to the shop, they could feel the heat radiating from the building. Because of this, they began to cool the building down by drowning it in water on the outside.

“If you’re not ready, if you don’t have all your players, they’re all your firefighters (ready) ... you open it up, introduce oxygen into the building and cause more (of a) fire,” Anderson said.

When the Ucon Fire water tender arrived, crews opened the shop’s door and began watering down a fifth-wheel trailer and other equipment. Anderson said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it seemed to start near the fifth wheel’s hitch.

The fire destroyed the fifth-wheel trailer, and the smoke damaged the shop’s contents. Central Fire estimates around $350,000 was caused by the fire.

Anderson said if a building has a lot of smoke pouring out, the best thing to do is to leave it alone.

“Don’t introduce air and oxygen to a fire, keep the doors closed, just like these guys did,” Anderson said. “We didn’t open doors until we were ready. Therefore it kept the fire at bay.”
