AMERICAN FALLS — A former city employee is under investigation for an unspecified administrative matter that prompted the American Falls Police Department to forward the case to the Power County Prosecutor's Office for possible charges, according to a city news release.

The city did not identify the former employee, describe the nature of the alleged offense or disclose how much, if any, public money may be involved. The Power County Prosecutor's Office declined to comment.

The city said it discovered the matter internally and acted swiftly to address it, though few details were released besides the fact the individual is no longer employed by the city.

City officials also said they have reviewed internal financial processes and are implementing additional safeguards to prevent similar issues in the future.

"The City of American Falls takes its responsibility as a steward of public resources seriously," the release stated.

City services and daily operations are continuing without disruption, the release said.

The city's news release offered few specifics, describing only an "internal administrative matter" involving "administrative operations."

The news release stated, "This matter has been investigated by the American Falls Police Department. Upon completion of the investigation, the case was forwarded to the Power County Prosecutor’s Office for review and consideration of any potential charges. The city will defer to the Prosecutor’s Office regarding any further legal determinations. As this matter is now under review, no additional details are being released at this time."

The Prosecutor's Office will determine whether any charges will be filed.
