A tense standoff near Pocatello ended peacefully Wednesday afternoon after law enforcement from multiple agencies talked down an armed and intoxicated woman who had reportedly fired a shot and made suicidal statements — with family members ultimately playing a key role in resolving the crisis.

The incident began to unfold when Power County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched at 2:43 p.m. to a residence on Truckerville Road approximately seven miles northwest of Pocatello after an individual reported a 33-year-old woman was intoxicated, making suicidal statements and had a firearm in her possession.

When deputies arrived and made initial contact, the situation escalated — the woman fired one round from her firearm into the ground, authorities said. No one was in the immediate area and the residence was unoccupied at the time. As a precaution neighboring residents were advised to shelter in place.

The law enforcement response grew quickly. The Bannock County Sheriff’s Office, Idaho State Police, Fort Hall police and Bureau of Land Management Rangers rushed to the scene along with the Fort Hall Fire Department and Power County EMS.

Police negotiators established contact with the woman by cell phone. Then came the turning point — family members arrived on scene and proved instrumental in de-escalating the situation. The firearm was safely removed and the woman was transported by family members for mental health care after declining a medical evaluation from EMS.

No shots were fired by law enforcement and no injuries were sustained by the woman, officers or any area residents.

Truckerville Road has since reopened and authorities say there is no active threat to the community.
