Old Town shooting

Police respond to an apparent self-inflicted shooting following a foot pursuit on South Johnson Avenue Sunday in Pocatello.

POCATELLO — A Pocatello man reportedly shot himself in the city’s west side Sunday afternoon after running from a Pocatello police officer, who recognized he had an outstanding felony warrant.

Idaho State Police, who are investigating the incident, said Michael Leigh, 34, fled when the police officer approached him on South Johnson Avenue. Police said Leigh ran inside a shed, and the pursuing officer heard what he believed was a gunshot.

Coroner Ely Taysom confirmed Leigh succumbed to the gunshot wound at the scene following the incident, which occurred at about 2:30 p.m.

Police closed access to South Johnson Avenue from Bonneville Street to Whitman Street after the incident.

Neighbors in the area said they heard several sirens and many police cars were driving by at a high speed after the incident.
