BLACKFOOT — A bank robbery threat at a Blackfoot credit union late Wednesday morning sent police scrambling to a nearby Walmart, where officers secured the store and tracked down the alleged suspect inside.

The incident began to unfold around 10:50 a.m. when staff at Westmark Credit Union at 575 Jensen Grove Drive reported a robbery threat to Blackfoot police, providing a vehicle description and the alleged suspect’s identity, Blackfoot police said in a news release. By the time officers arrived, the alleged suspect had already left the credit union.

Police quickly located the alleged suspect’s vehicle sitting unoccupied in the Walmart parking lot not far away. For approximately 10 minutes, officers worked with Walmart managers to secure the store while they searched for the subject inside, police said.

The alleged suspect was located inside the store and detained without incident.

Detectives from the Bingham County Joint Detective Division then interviewed both credit union staff and the alleged suspect who was later released.

Police said their investigation determined no robbery actually occurred — but something did happen inside the credit union that may constitute a misdemeanor offense. The case has been submitted to the Blackfoot City Prosecutor’s Office for review of potential charges.

The alleged suspect’s identity has not been released. The Blackfoot Police Department was assisted by the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office during the incident.

The investigation remains active and pending prosecutorial review, police said.
